Welcome to CARA Cooling
The coolest way to upcycle heat

Residual Heat - Waste or Resource?
CARA Cooling is developing an innovative cooling solution that uses water as the refrigerant and is powered by waste heat. By leveraging surplus thermal energy - often considered a byproduct - CARA’s system provides sustainable and energy-efficient cooling without relying on traditional, environmentally harmful refrigerants. This approach not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also enhances energy circularity in industrial and commercial applications.
The choice of heat sources is plentiful. District heating, condensed steam outlets, flue gas, solar mirror panels, geothermic or something else.
Technology & Applications
Our journey is rooted in a unique technological legacy. The foundation of our cooling solution traces back to compressor-based desalination systems developed in Israel in the early 1960s. Over time, this technology evolved and was adapted for cooling applications, with Danish innovation playing a leading role in its advancement.
At CARA Cooling, we are building on this proven foundation—applying well-established principles in new, forward-thinking ways. By combining historical insight with modern engineering, we are creating cutting-edge cooling solutions that are both sustainable and scalable.
Targeted applications
The CARA process especially targets the following applications:
Industrial processes
Data centers
Renewable energy grid integration
Building HVAC cooling by using district heating - save topside space and electricity,
Water as the refrigerant?
Yes! Here's why
Water is one of the most sustainable and effective refrigerants available, offering a range of environmental and technical advantages:
Natural and Non-Toxic
Water is safe for people and the planet. It’s non-toxic, non-flammable, and poses no risk to health or safety—unlike many synthetic refrigerants.
Zero Global Warming Potential (GWP)
Unlike hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other synthetic refrigerants, water has a GWP of zero. It does not contribute to climate change, making it a future-proof choice in a world moving toward stricter environmental regulations.
Excellent Thermodynamic Properties
Water has a high specific heat capacity and a large latent heat of vaporization. This means it can absorb and transfer significant amounts of heat efficiently, making it highly effective in cooling applications.
Abundant and Inexpensive
Water is widely available and low-cost, reducing both operational and environmental costs over the system’s lifetime.
Compatible with Waste Heat
Water-based cooling systems can be driven by low-grade waste heat, enabling energy reuse and improving overall system efficiency.
Zero effect on Ozone Layer and no long term unknown effects on the environment
Water vapor entering the atmosphere enters a well known cycle and has zero effect on the ozone layer
